“Knock knock, who could it be?/N*ggas know I got it on lock/Yack yack, rappers better move before you b*tches get dropped”
Habits and Contradictions seems like such a long time ago. Everyone touted ScHoolboy Q’s vast improvement since Setbacks but between his feature here on “Unnecessary” and earlier on Ab-Soul’s single, “SOPA,” it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that even brighter days are ahead for the Hoover Crip turnt rapper. Most noticeably, the man’s once monotonous, one-dimensional flow seemingly has taken a life of its own, now bending like a rubber band every which way to adjust the record’s energy level and bolster the lyrics.
The song’s host, Childish Gambino, is no slouch either and definitely doesn’t let Q’s killer verse completely push him to the side. Armed with an arsenal of chuckle-inducing punch lines, he does his best to drop several bars that I will be yelling the next time I get wasted (“F*ck y’all, we A-team, y’all Plan B like Walgreens”). I don’t usually follow Donald Glover’s discography with a microscope, but a couple more records like this and that might just change very soon.
