Thank God Spike’s sense of style played zero role in the design of the Air Jordan 6 Retro ‘Varsity Red.’ They’re definitely the bolder, better shoes of the pack when compared to the OG Spizikes releasing the same weekend. Both pairs of kicks serve as a tribute to Spike Lee’s 40 Acres And A Mule production company that churned out hits like Do The Right Thing and Malcom X, as well as turds like Girl 6. Hey, can’t win em all.
I, for one, would like to welcome varsity red back into the fold with open arms. Although not as bright as the Infrared 23s, there’s still plenty of character to go around on these tonal Jordan 6s with the hints of green as well as tumbled leather panels. Adding some more color to the midsole would have been appreciated but this pair can still stand with the originals and not look like the suits at Jordan Brand were running out of ideas when they created the concept for the shoe.
The Air Jordan 6 Retro ‘Varsity Red’ releases August 9th. Retail is $170. Were it not for the ‘Sport Blue’ 6s dropping at the end of this month, these would be an instant purchase. As is, I’m choosing blue over red but either pair’s a winner.
