When it comes to canvas sneakers, a simple pair of Vans Authentics or Chuck Taylors does the trick for me. I eschew anything that tries to glamorize a shoe that should otherwise come in a solid color with a gum sole for under $45.
So I suppose that I should feel some sort of negative way about Maison Martin Margiela’s take on Converse’s iconic Chuck Taylors and Jack Purcells, but, oddly, I like them. Disregarding the $200 price tag–a sum I’m loathe to part with–the Paris fashion house’s version stays true to what’s sold me on Chucks in the first place: the shoe’s inherent simplicity in both color and design.
Maison Martin Margiela’s concoction incorporates a cream-colored painted outer that spices up the shoe without sh*tting all over it. As GQ notes, it’s the perfect blend between high-fashion and street-style, and it’s hard to disagree.
The Converse Maison Martin Margiela sneakers will be available for purchase globally in September at Margiela stores, and at select Converse First String retailers. If you’re willing to burn two Benjamins on a pair of kicks, these sneakers pair well with everything from a pair of crisp selvedge denim to some camo khakis or slim-cut trousers.
If I were actually willing, then I could definitely cheat on canvas to lace these suckers up.
