Year after year, Nike’s laid it on pretty thick with the holiday branding in the month of December. Not for Festivus, but for the greatest Hallmark holiday of them all: Christmas. After the first three or four installments, I figured the packs would run out of steam and kind of die out, especially after the LeBrons of last year. Turns out the Swoosh went subtle and created another surprising trio of shoes.
This time around the actual colors of Christmas take a back seat to the inspiration of each shoe, which is good because kicks heavy on forest green and bright red should only really be worn like twice a year. Drawing from the design of the shoe itself, the Kobe 9 Elite ‘Knit Stocking’ plays off the material used for the Black Mamba’s wildest design yet. The KD7 ‘Eggnog’ is a reference to a lot of holiday shenanigans that may lead to some early Fall babies, and rounding out the pack is the LeBron 12 ‘Akron Birch,’ representing the Chosen One’s return to his Ohio roots.
The patterns on the LeBrons make me think there’s hope for NikeID letting buyers throw custom pictures onto some silhouettes, but for now, we get “photorealistic” images of James’ choosing. As per usual, the thought process put into the KD7s is on point. I especially liked the glossy splatter pattern on the heel counter.
A bonus to this collection? It comes a day after Christmas on the 26th so you all can go crazy with the gift cards and greenbacks. The Nike Kobe 9 Elite ‘Knit Stocking’ retails for $225, the KD7 ‘Eggnog’ for $170, and the LeBron 12’Akron Birch’ for $220, all available on Friday at 8AM EST on Nike.com.
