Let’s just say Damian Lillard had one of those “wanna get away?” Southwest Airlines-type moments.
That’s because the Blazers second year star managed to piss off four legends with a combined 15 Pro Bowls, nine first-team All Pros, 28,953 rushing yards, 244 touchdowns, 54,110 points, 19 All Star Game appearances and two NBA MVPs. So what exactly did D-Trillard do? He cracked a “no rings” joke while Barry Sanders, LaDanian Tomlinson, Chris Webber and Karl Malone were all over his crib for a cookout.
To Damian’s credit, however, it’s hard to fault the guy for feeling on top of the world when adidas reportedly awarded him basketball’s largest shoe deal with the exception of LeBron James’ with Nike and brand-mate Derrick Rose. With options and incentives littered throughout the contract, Lillard’s deal could eclipse the $100M plateau.
“Damian has proven to be not only an amazing basketball player, but a great partner, member of the community and someone who creates excitement for our products,” said Chris Grancio, adidas head of global basketball sports marketing. “His leadership and commitment to success on the court and his ability to interact and relate to fans through social media and the community make him the perfect fit to be one of the cornerstones of the adidas brand.”
Lillard and the Blazers are set to square off in a first round battle with the Rockets next week once the playoffs tip off. Hopefully this commercial doesn’t come back to bite him in the ass when he’s starring in ads with D-Rose’s son in about 25 years.
