“A black man will never dream of talking to the police high. That’s a waste of weed.”
With the level of racial tension as combative as it is nowadays with everything taking place in America, sometimes the best medicine is a good laugh. And when that brief moment of joy results from laughing at racism? Oh, well, now that’s even better.
Take Dave Chappelle and his (white) friend, Chip, for example. Killin’ ‘Em Softly is landmark standup special of my lifetime and the segment about Chip’s wheelings and dealings with the police constitutes as a huge reason why. It’s so funny because there’s 1000% truth in the relationship between police and African-Americans.
Comedy has always been a vehicle for societal awareness, and a lot of what Dave says in this near 10-minute clip applies to much of what we’re seeing in 2013. Click play on the clip as an alternative to turning on the TV and the inescapable debates on CNN, MSNBC, FOX and other outlets on where the nation is headed. As morbid as it sounds, the topic of race in America is going to be around forever.
We may as well laugh about it every now and then, right?
Bonus: Speaking of race, let’s play a game with this Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor skit. Get a glass of water, take a sip and hold the water in your mouth. If you can watch this without spitting it out and not laughing, I’ll buy you a beer the next time we cross paths.
