If David Banner isn’t down South, he’s chilling in Brooklyn, where he links up with Maino for “Castles in Brooklyn,” another song from the impending Sex, Drugs & Video Games due later this month. The songs that he’s released so far from the project show an oscillation between ignorance and consciousness, whether he’s condemning Hip-Hop for the use of “Swag” or rapping about “Yao Ming” in a context that doesn’t even make sense. With “Castles in Brooklyn,” he taps into his ignorant side and sounds so at home over the ferocious, heart thumping beat, even if he’s not physically in the South.
Sure, it’s dope that he pays homage to Biggie and the Beastie Boys, too, with that sample from “Brass Monkey” (#RIPMCA), but the excellence of the video stems from Banner himself. Taking a break from his seriousness, he really looks like he’s up to no good, hollering at random girls, laughing his ass off at his own antics, and loving every second of it. The sheer enjoyment on Banner’s face is refreshing to see, and reminds us that revolutionaries need to relax and have fun, too.
