Amidst a plethora of blurred R&B love songs from the ’70s and ’80s, Debra Laws “Very Special” stands out from the bunch. Although never an extremely successful single, this down-tempo jam finds the Houston songstress and her brother Ronnie creepily exchanging sweet nothings to one another. Their passes lie amidst a courtyard of curious instrumentation that instantly warms the soul. In a genre built more on songwriting than substance, hearing this type of authenticity goes a long way.
Over 30 years, apparently.
