“Money Trees” is one of the best songs on one of the best albums of last year. It’s a record that was built to perfection from the ground up as producer DJ Dahi chose to reverse a segment from Beach House’s “Silver Soul” and loop it to create the framework for Dot and (especially) Jay Rock to come in and drop three dazzling verses. The video clip is one of the more informative ones I’ve seen with Dahi explaining to the viewers his exact thought process and what went into the song’s creation. As you’ll find out in a minute, the beat is much more than just the sample looping backwards.
In addition to the usual drums, hi-hats, cowbells and such, the L.A. producer had the ear to tack on some darker synths in the background to give it more of a somber undertone than the original to set an appropriate mood for Kendrick’s story. It goes without saying that the end result was executed to perfection thanks to each player fulfilling their role appropriately, and the whole turned out to be far greater than the sum of the individual parts.
And since we’re here, we’ll toss in footage of Kendrick decoding another one of our favorites from ’12 and a standout from his album, “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst,” for Life & Times.
