There aren’t many more things to stay about Big K.R.I.T.’s groundbreaking 2010 project that haven’t already been documented. The brutal honesty and lyrical wizardy that defined K.R.I.T. Wuz Here was only overshadowed by the reality the Mississippi native produced the entire album himself. Yet, for as heralded as it was, KWH was cooked with the recipe all classics in music have been – through inspiration.
The shortcomings he witnessed and experienced throughout his life essentially write themselves, but songs of yesteryear helped stir the pot. In light of this, K.R.I.T. and the consistently quality Yours Tru.ly put together a dope project which outlined the samples used on a slew of the LP’s adored records.
It’s not often that an artist is responsible for every aspect of an album, but “Wuz Here” is 100% Big K.R.I.T. Knowing how rare a gift that was made me wonder how he got from inspiration to execution; from sketch to song; scribble to verse, and single to album. So I asked him to go back to source, to the wax, to those original grooves that he made into something new for his debut. Before There Wuz Here (The Excavation) is a product of that exploration, and a pre-cursor to K.R.I.T.’s next project, The Return of Forever and his so far untitled, Yours Tru.ly presented, live collaborative EP with Grillade, coming soon.
This is definitely one for the archives.
