Upon skimming through Casey Veggies’ latest installment of his Customized Greatly mixtape series, it seems there’s somewhat of a sonic identity crisis going on. Some of the songs – for instance, the booming “Toe Tag” or his reunion with Odd Future on “PNCINTLOFWGKTA” – carried a straight obnoxious feel, which is cool if that’s your thing. However, the vast majority of the project carried a smooth, sample-based formula, which allowed the Inglewood teenager to show his maturity and knock out a song like “Thoughts Weigh.”
Standing out from the accompanying tracks and featuring the always-smooth Raheem DeVaughn singing alongside some pleasing keys and live brass, this coming of age joint finds Veggies kicking some knowledge and showing his craft doesn’t have to be quite as gimmicky as some of his counterparts. However, hearing such maturity come after an unoriginal street knocker like “Verified” just doesn’t add up.
Then again, this is only a mixtape and Casey still can’t drink legally, so there’s obviously room to grow. If he can figure out a way to make his future works a little more seamless, making music that blends his occasionally ratchet fan-base with the grown crowd he seems to be aiming for, then he’d have no reason to customize anything.
