Rap’s most benevolent King emancipated his long-waited project My Everlasting Zeal a few days ago. At over a year in the making, the 14-project release may be his most polished to date, justifying the wait. While the features are few, the NC native called in more than enough guests to work behind the boards: Omen, J. Cole, Commissioner Gordon, Soundtrakk, Prolyfic and others.
As if the early leaks “Reign” and the J. Cole-produced record “The Allure” weren’t enough to warrant attention, press play on “About Me” and listen Mez explains the parts and influences that create the whole. Throughout the track, Mez’s content creates a balance between enjoying the frivolities of the here and now (“cleaning the icy soles, trying to stop the oxidation, Ain’t much you can really do, when you see that yellow coming, Being fly n*ggas, that’s our only occupation”) while having enough good wits to prepare for and work towards the future. For his hard work, his future’s happening right now, building cut by impressive cut.
King Mez – “About Me”
* – Shoe references in songs always get a thumbs up but when you speak about them like you know about them, that’s a definite two thumbs up. Trust, nobody but enthusiasts use the word “oxidation” in their conversations.
