Diehard Taylors generally point to 2011’s Cabin Fever as Wiz Khalifa’s last great effort. The mixtape dropped seemingly on a whim and featured Wiz rapping tougher and grimier than anything he’d dropped since Star Power. More than a year later, the Pittsburgh MC seems to be following suit, releasing this Taylor Allderdice project almost out of nowhere.
Earlier in February, he admitted that Rolling Papers wasn’t his best work, all but confirming that Atlantic had molded his style into something a bit more profitable. Given the wide range of his previous work – Star Power and Prince of the City were both hard-hitting gems, while Kush & Orange Juice remains his gold standard – Taylor Allderdice seems to be a culmination of his best works. Hopefully this will show that the Bing commercials and red carpet appearances didn’t totally compromise the artist that so many people have grown to love over the past four years.
No matter what anybody says, Wiz has a lot to prove with this one. Give it a spin and see for yourselves if he’s answered his critics.
