There’s something undeniably unique about XV’s product. Maybe it’s the way he’s able to blend catchy hooks with free-flowing rhymes. Or maybe it’s the uptempo-drenched beats that give backbone to his tracks. These are unique, no doubt; however, it’s the relative subject material of porn, video games and a nerdy ethos that gives the Wichita, Kansas-bred MC’s product charm. His latest project, Zero Heroes, provides further testament.
For the project, XV enlists the talents of Pusha T, CyHi Da Prynce and Kendrick Lamar among others, while Just Blaze, Seven and J. Cole handle production duties. Tracks like “Awesome” and “Foreign Exchange Student” provide the uplifting bounce characteristic of Vizzy’s previous work. And it’s tunes like “Smallville” and “Wichita” that show the rapper can put down the caffeinated energy drinks long enough to spit over slower tracks as well. However, it’s the frequent pop culture references and Super Mario Bros. allusions that make Vizzy more Rivers Cuomo than HOV.
Forget an XXL Freshman designation. XV is carving out his own niche in Hip-Hop, Xbox controller and comic book firmly in hand.
