yU – A Garbage Beat Tape

yU’s best known for his work on the microphone, whether he’s on the solo tip or doing his thing as one-third of Diamond District. But over the years, he’s crafted some gems behind the boards as well. Check his work on Before Taxes, for example – “Corners” is damn good, and I still wake up with “Fine” stuck in my head.

Now, he’s let loose a tape of some of the other quality beats he had rattling around. A Garbage Beat Tape: 1 is lo-fi ish, nothing fancy. Digital, yet dusty. yU knows his way around a record and pulls some choice samples for this tape – I had some trouble forcing myself past the crackling drums and deep, melancholy vocals on “iKnowNothing,” but the mellow bass groove of “Seven and a Half” eventually dragged me away. A couple of interludes liven things up as well, just to make the tape more of a cohesive project.

And, just in case y’all want some more goodness from yU, his second solo album, entitled The Earn, is set to drop December 13th and available for pre-order at iTunes and UGHH.
