“I went in headfirst, never thinking about what I said hurt
In what verse, my mom probably got it the worst, the brunt of it
But as stubborn as we are, did I take it too far, ‘Cleaning Out My Closet’
And all them other songs, but regardless I don’t hate you
Cause ma, you’re still beautiful to me, cause you’re my mom”

Eminem’s strained relationship with his mom, Debbie Mathers, is well known, perhaps only secondary to his long-running dislike for his ex-wife Kim. Over the years, he’s come to admit his mistakes and misgivings, mostly through the form of his music, the same medium he used to bash her so many years and songs before.

For Mother’s Day, he extends the olive branch a bit further by calling on Spike Lee to direct the video for “Headlights,” taken from The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Hearing his words are one thing, but seeing how he and Lee crafted them into a mini-movie of sorts gives them more weight, showing how an older, more mellow Marshall’s learned to view incidents from his past from a different point of view now that he’s aged and raised children of his own.
