Evan Holt may be a young MC but, on “In The City,” he has a delivery beyond his years. His vivid display of the iron jungle inserts a raw shot of desperation rap you don’t usually hear from rappers in his age bracket. His monotone flow carries a good sense of conviction as his rhymes report, rather than glamorize, the ills of the streets.
Thelonious Martin does right by a live version of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” as well. The flip exudes vibes reminiscent of Roc Marciano’s work but doesn’t come off as a wholesale bite. Martin builds another rap partnership with Holt here so the two might be on to something.
“In This City” stands as the first tidbit of Temptations: Evan Holt’s upcoming project. Keep your eyes peeled for more info as details surface.
