Summer is unofficially over after Labor Day. Gone are the short shorts on the ladies, men trade in tanks for flannels and everyone puts endless days on the beach behind us (unless you’re a lucky bastard and live in the tropics). But all the news isn’t doom and gloom. For us cinephiles, it means we finally to get retrieve our brains after hanging out with all the mindless (but fun) summer blockbusters and get back to fine film watching.

One movie of particular interest is the Bill Condon (Kinsey, Dreamgirls, The Twilight Saga-Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2) directed The Fifth Estate. Based in part on Wikileak’s spokesman Daniel Domsheit-Berg’s tell-all book Inside Wikileaks and other biographical exposes on the controversial “leaker” Julian Assange, the film stars Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Bastards), Laura Linney (The Big C), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), and Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Hurt Locker) as it chronicles the journey of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and his campaign for the “truth.”

What brings this movie to my attention and potentially makes it a sleeper-smash this fall is the person playing the aforementioned Assange, Britain’s former best kept secret, Benedict Cumberbatch. The star of the BBC hit Sherlock, Cumberbatch is an actor with an almost preternatural ability to own the screen when he graces it with his presence and create amazing characters. His roles in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Parade’s End, and Star Trek Into Darkness perfectly display his acting prowess and if anyone can truly portray the larger than life Assange, its Cumberbatch*.

Peep the trailer below and be on the lookout for The Fifth Estate on October 18th.

* — Plus, he’s playing Smaug in The Hobbit Trilogy AND has a major role in Chiwetel’s 12 Years A Slave. The guy is WORKING.
