For months (well, years actually), Fox has been bouncing around the notion that they were going to reboot their early 2000s Fantastic Four franchise before the rights to the characters reverted back to Marvel Comics. This is of course the reason why no Fantastic Four character or characters associated with the team have appeared in any of the other Marvel Studios’ films. In recent months more concrete information has started to come up and today it looks as though two of the cast members have been fully picked: Kate Mara (House of Cards) and Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station).
The two young and promising thespians have been cast as the brother-sister duo of Susan Storm and Johnny Storm aka The Invisible Woman and the Human Torch, respectively. No word yet on how they’re going to pull off the brother and sister thing since they’re of different race, but hey, it’s comics so screw it. This leaves the casting of Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, and Ben Grimm, aka The Thing. Both of which have some pretty solid rumored casting behind them, namely Miles Teller (That Awkward Moment) as Mr. Fantastic and Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin) as the Thing. We’ll probably know in the coming weeks whether or not these rumors become facts.
The Fantastic Four reboot, set for a June 19th, 2015 release, is set to be based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four version of Marvel’s First Family. This means a different origin for their powers and some pretty different characterization for the cast. Instead of being adults, the Ultimate F4 gained their powers while being teenager and working at an advanced think tank.
It opens up a lot of possibilities for what this new film may be based on. Given the way the hype cycle works, we’ll be getting more information very soon.
