Frank Ocean fans have been clamoring for a new album from the Channel Orange singer for years. And rumor had it that the album was coming in July. Where others may have felt bad for the waiting fans, Ocean’s brother Ryan Breaux saw an opportunity to spread some misery.
Breaux rickrolled Ocean’s fans with a fake announcement that the album (possibly called States?) had dropped over the weekend, posting a widely circulated photo of Frank holding an issue of his magazine Boys Don’t Cry with the caption, “It’s finally out! Link in my bio.”
Uber-fans who followed the link were met with nothing but Rick Astley dancing and singing “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
The vast majority of the 1,200+ comments on the photo express rage at Breaux for preying on fan excitement. “UR A SAVAGE,” and its variants, was a common refrain.
Ocean’s website currently redirects to a shop with the Boys Don’t Cry name in the URL. There’s a promise that something will be “opening soon” and a prompt for a password. In case Frank’s web team fixes that glitch, here’s a screenshot of what it looks like:
All we really know about the new album is that parts of it may have been recorded at Abbey Road Studios. And that’s certainly no solace to the thousands of fans who just watched someone who’s decidedly not Frank Ocean croon from their screens.
