Freddie Gibbs, Complex And The Interview Of A Thousand Quotables

Having had the pleasure of knowing Freddie Gibbs for coming up on two years now, the one aspect about Gary’s favorite rebel I have grown to marvel more and more is his uncanny ability not to bite his tongue. At some point in most of our lives, whether it be school or work, exercising restraint in what you say is imperative. Not for Fred. He says what he wants, how he wants, when he wants and to whom he wants. For the latest example, try his sit down with the good folks at Complex.

The editorial brain trust created their best questions towards Gibbs and he fired back with journalistic gold while reading ‘Plex’s latest newsstand exhibit featuring “these goofy ass Maybach Music dudes.”

On if signing to CTE was a response to MMG’s additions

Yeah, it looked like that. But trust me, the shit we’re doing has nothing to do with the shit going on over there. It looked like that, but he ain’t trying to build no big Voltron robot to go against this nigga’s Voltron robot. It’s definitely not like that. It’s just thug niggas fucking with other real thug niggas.

On rappers needing to stay in their lanes

It’s just the nature of the times. It’s cool to be that corny motherfucker wearing the little jeans now, I guess. Girls like that. It’s cool to be the pretty boy. I don’t even know what these niggas is. I can’t even pinpoint them. I just be like, “What are you, my nigga? What’s your story?” I don’t like rap that doesn’t have a story behind it.

Like, you was just working at K-Mart and started rapping or something like that? It’s the backspin behind shit. How can I get to know you as a person by listening to your music? And what am I getting? What experience are you bringing me outside of a nigga rapping about fucking some bitches and you being hot? I just saw a Yung Berg video where he keeps being like, “Don’t make me do it.” I’m like, “Don’t make you do what? Get your chain took again?”

On Lil B’s “Swag Rap”

That’s some buttfuck rap. That’s a whole issue. I’m saying, you can’t even put these niggas [like Wale and Big Sean] in a category. You don’t know what the fuck they are. I’m a gangsta rapper. That shit is just like if you had a box in here of shit you didn’t want, it was just miscellaneous shit, that’s where you’d throw them niggas. It’s a box of lost and found shit.

Trust and believe that is merely the tip of the iceberg. Complex really lucked up on a marathon of quotes resulting in an interview not often seen these days with PR conglomerates and carefully catered images being the norm. Gibbs is himself throughout. It’s certain to piss a lot of people off because there is no filter. It’s just a man, his weed and his thoughts – the same way Freddie has always presented himself.

Bonus: Botanists unite! While recording the Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away EP – which is on iTunes, by the way – Freddie didn’t Smoke DZA and Chace Infinite leave the studio without shooting the video for my personal favorite, “Keep It Warm 4 Ya.”
