Gameboi – “Emergency”

With so many rappers in the fold nowadays, very rarely am I drawn to an artist based on their moniker alone. But, when I saw an Ann Arbor MC named himself after the original hand-held Nintendo device many of us grew up on, I was impressed. However, the ultimate irony lies in the fact that Gameboi is only 16-years-old and has probably never even played a game of Tetris on that original brick of grey plastic once in his life.

Still, dampness behind the ears doesn’t stop this young man from adding some grown folk flavor atop his latest single, “Emergency.” Over producer J57’s 16-bit, hi-end bass melody, the baby-faced Wolverines fan drops metaphors referencing Rakim songs and Foo Fighter singles that came out before he could walk, proving he both knows his history and can hang with the big boys on the mic. Actually, that’s a feat he’s already accomplished, as GB was featured amongst some of the biggest players in hip-hop on Staik Selktah’s slept-on Population Control album.

This track in particular, though, will be featured Gameboi’s upcoming Young & Restless mixtape, which should be dropping soon and impressing old heads eventually.
