Gunplay, Stalley, Wale & Meek Mill, Rick Ross & Kendrick Lamar – “Power Circle”

At the rate he’s going, considering his consistent level of excellence on the mic, Kendrick Lamar is starting to make each of his guest verses something of a mini event in Hip-Hop. Doubly so when he’s rapping alongside a legitimate star like Rick Ross, which is the case on “Power Circle,” the eight-and-a-half minute opening track from MMG’s Self Made Vol. 2.

But with Stalley, Meek Mill, Wale, and K. Dot’s “Cartoon & Cereal” collaborator Gunplay also on the track, Ross mostly sits back and lets his soldiers* go to work over the appropriately opulent production, the lush piano and strings bringing out the best in everyone’s voice. As expected, Kendrick comes through with a dense 16 kicking yet another new flow, while the sometimes overlooked Stalley shows and proves for MMG with a memorable opening to a great verse about shaking off the past in the midst of new success: “I’m part of the small percentage of ni**as who make it out the ghetto, But ni**as tried to pull me back ’cause misery loves company.”
