If there’s ever a question of how to put 50+ artists and media into a compact space and have them get along peacefully, the answer’s quite simple. And if a follow-up question is posed about how to pack a couple of hundred entertainment-hungry fans into that same, already filled space, the answer will remain the same.
You give them sports, specifically basketball. Even more detailed, you invite them to Hoop & Hang.
For the third time in a row, we managed to get together with homies and friends for our friendly, but highly competitive three-on-three tournament held at SXSW. And, to be completely honest, the whole event couldn’t have gone any smoother.
After weeks and months of planning, my Friday felt like “let’s just get this done. I’m tired of thinking about it.” All of the scheduling accommodations, staffing, gathering of supplies from sponsors can take their toll. By the Saturday morning of the event, I woke up charged and ready and, when I got to the Pan-American Center, I was greeted by a whole pack of friends – some old, many new – who were ready to do the same.

As far as the final outcome, it couldn’t have been scripted better. On one side stood rap’s “it” guy, Trinidad Jame$ and his team of three and, on the other opposing side, there was Texas’ own Killa Kyleon and co. Both teams were posed of newcomers to Hoop x Hang, guys who reached out and expressed an interest in playing. And when the teams got down to the final two, these squads were left. Before the game, announcer Chas Moore asked each MC/team captain to make a prediction and both declined. Yes, two rappers – the kind of people who in general won’t shy away from an opportunity to brag – both turned it down.
Instead, each artist took the opportunity to reiterate two key points: brotherhood and fun. Right then, we could’ve closed up shop, seriously. For three years, those two concepts have been the driving focus of the event ever since HardKnock TV’s Nick Huff and I dreamed it up. Everybody competes and the games get testy and loud. But at the end of the day, it’s all daps and pounds and new bonds and alliances formed. Lines of communication opened between artist to artist, media to artist, etc.
Who won? The game itself came down to the very last shot in a game of 15, scored by twos and threes. To see the outcome, watch the footage below, shot by Anthony A and edited by Ian Stewart of V6M Productions.
But walking away from Saturday, I’d say everybody who stepped foot in the gym won in some way.

Wow the lineup has gotten jii big since the first time yall did the event. Glad it’s getting more diverse too. Though my only gripe is I wish yall did it more in-depth coverage like last year. Reading how Jake One gave TC that work is still priceless.
don’t worry. you’ll hear more…soon lol.
Also who knew Trinidad James had the clutchness in his blood tho? Contested 3 pt to seal the game? I’ll golf cap to that.
Dope.
That was a TERRIBLE shot by Trinidad that just happened to go in…
Really? It ain’t seem like the shot was that bad. He released it at the top of his jump. The form wasn’t ugly and it looked like dude bumped into him after the shot. Iunno maybe its the camera angle.
not exactly true.
By that final gm, those two teams were exhausted after having run 5-6 gms in the span of a few hrs…and a night of performances on Friday.
the fact that it was contested….he kind of just chucked it up with utmost confidence Kobe style and it went in.
and it is a weird camera angle.
That was actually not a bad shot, especially because it went in. The only bad shots are the ones that don’t go in. “Terrible” is forcing it.
whats that song sampling Milk…i literally dreamed of it a couple nights ago….not quite what i had in my head, but dope though.
As one of the guys barking loud for Team Run-It during the actual game, everybody was dumbfounded as hell when Trinidad turned into Kobe the Killer for those last few baskets.
Yo, how did you guys ever expect to win anything, fielding Spin? That guy’s like 4 feet tall!
J/K Spin’s my dude, it’s all love. Mad I didn’t get to go this year, but hey, it gives me a whole ‘nother year to train. Let me get a team together, suckas…
Just from seeing those few clips of Trinidad, im confident that he’s the type of dude i would hate playing against.
A Brief Analysis (since I was working more than watching)
RT-FaQ and Kid Named Breezy – Were fast as fuck and droppin’ buckets on top of buckets. They were ringers last year but EVERYBODY knew what to expect this year…and they were still gettin’ buckets.
Vada – Played in year one and I said he had the sweetest shot then. That hasn’t changed.
If Dutch (KRIT’s road manger) is the strongest player from all three years, Killa Kyleon just came in and took second place. I’ll keep it 100 – I did not expect him to be able to ball. I was wrong as fuck lol.
T. Jame$ – Can definitely hold his own on the court. Didn’t know he was an avid hooper. I’d heard it, but seeing it was different.
I’ll type some more notes as I remember everything lol.
JAMES lol
whens 2chains showing off his ball skills?
Killa’s team fucked me up
That was not a fair matchup for you guys lol.
