To follow the latest segment in the long-running beef between these rap darlings Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks (try typing their names out without looking them up), it’s best to start with the latter’s very lengthy and detailed interview with Hot97’s Rosenberg and Ebro yesterday. In it, Banks calls out Iggy and T.I., like she always does, along with others for being culture vultures.
To boil it down, her problem comes down to White artists and the industry as a whole taking Black culture to “exploit that shit” for profit and gain while Black artists are marginalized and left behind. “I feel like, in this country, whenever it comes to our things, like black issues or black politics or black music or whatever, there’s always this undercurrent of kinda like a ‘F*** you,'” Banks claims. “There’s always a ‘F*** y’all n****s. Y’all don’t really own sh*t. Y’all don’t have sh*t.’ That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record. That Iggy Azalea shit isn’t better than any f***ing black girl that’s rapping today.”
To be honest, Banks’ interview was worth the 45 minutes spent. She’s very passionate, breaking down into tears at points. It’s very, very hard to ignore the idea that some of her rants originate from a place of truth.
Iggy caught wind of Banks words and she didn’t back down. The Aussie rapper took to her Twitter to comment on less on what Azealia had to say and more on her adversary’s negative energy that she exudes.
True to form, Banks barked right back.
After those initial responses, the “212” rapper said “Goodnight,” which normally indicates a stopping point. But maybe she couldn’t sleep because she came right back at the discussion two hours later.
