Having been relatively quiet — with the exception of a few loose tracks and guest verses — since last year’s release of his successful debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, the time has come to see if J. Cole’s reluctance to “oversaturate” the game will pay dividends on his second go-round. Having announced plans to release what will presumably be his second solo LP in Born Sinner on January 28th, Cole unveils “Miss America,” the first look off the project.
Less a single and more a dusting off of the mic after some time away, “America” is a rumbling mix of heavy keys and tense guitar punctuated by spots of brash lyrics and anxious introspection. While it probably won’t be much of a commercial fixture, it could be a sign of a darker sophomore album to come.
