A J Dilla-Themed Donut Shop Will Open In Detroit This Fall

Of all the posthumous tributes to J Dilla, Dilla’s Uncle Herm’s new Detroit donut shop might be the most appropriate.

The Detroit News reports that Herman Hayes – brother to Dilla’s mom, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey – will open Dilla’s Delights in the Harmonie Park neighborhood this coming fall. The shop will occupy the ground floor of the Ashley and offer a variety of baked goods, including a Conant Gardens Glaze donut, Fantastic Fritters and McNasty macaroon. Dilla’s work will supply the store’s soundtrack.

For those hesitant to buy the idea, Hayes used to be a baker at the city’s Avalon bakery and claims he’s one of the reasons Dilla became hooked on the treats when he was a kid. Ma Dukes has also given her full support of the project. According to Hayes himself, the shop is the best way to honor his nephew’s legacy and “not by putting out another album, but putting a sustainable business with his name on it that I plan on being in Detroit long after I’m gone. It’s just what I can give back to him for giving us that music.”

Hayes is aiming for an October or November opening. The shop itself will be open Monday through Saturday and during select Sundays during Lions games.
