The title of Jabee and Thelonious Martin’s Deliver Us From Evil – the pair’s second collaborative EP after last year’s As It Is In Heaven – indicates a serious spiritual streak, but perhaps the more telling signifier is the project’s artwork. The cover art, with its archival brown tinge, is a throwback to simpler times.
Deliver Us From Evil is similarly modest in its ambitions. Jabee delivers his first-person narratives on friends, family, and music with spoken-word-like inflections, while Thelonious Martin sticks to earthy bassline grooves and muted drums – giving the project a street poetry feel.
