In one simple tweet, Alfonso Riberio, most known for is classic role as “Carlton” on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, confirmed news no one who grew up on the show was ready to hear. James Avery, forever known as “Uncle Phil,” passed away today from complications following open heart surgery. He was 65.
Avery served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and later went on to secure notable roles in his acting career including the voice of “Shredder” on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles, Dr. Doolittle 2, Soul Food (TV series), The Division and Grey’s Anatomy.
Yet, it was his role on Fresh Prince that became generational defining – and that’s not “prisoner of the moment” statement either. In one way or another, anyone who came to love and identify with the show saw Avery as their own uncle and the Banks Mansion as an imaginary home away from home.
There’s not much else to say than Rest In Power to James Avery, a friend and husband to those closest to him. An iconic TV dad to the rest of us.
P.S. – In this guy’s humble opinion, this was the single most powerful moment in sitcom history. Now it hits home 100x more. That didn’t seem possible 24 hours ago.
