Jesse Boykins III’s aptitude in the realm of crafting soulful, thoughtful, and heartfelt music is akin to watching early Aughts Kobe score 40+ in a game or The Rock control an audience. Born from the ashes of the Soulquarians, Native Tongue Posse, and ‘70s soul, Boykins music has always maintained a sense of sincerity and fun that can get lost in the melee of contemporary R&B sounds. And while he hasn’t given us a full LP since 2008’s The Beauty Created, he kept his name in the game with remixes to Drake tracks, some EPs, and collaborations with Melo-X and Theophilus London.

On April 22nd, however, he returns in full force with the release of his new album Love Apparatus. NPR has been provided with an early first listen and I can wholeheartedly say that Boykins has a winner on his hands. Less of an album and more of a sensuous backdrop to those spring and summer late nights with your boo, Love Apparatus comes across more like a musical aphrodisiac or monologue than some other R&B fare. Seductive melodies, pulsating bass lines, and lyrics that speak to the complexity of love and romance, this new album solidifies Jesse Boykins III position as a relatively unique voice on the musical landscape.
