Jim Tressel Lands Akron University Job

The next chapter in the book of Jim Tressel will take place where everything began. Starting May 1, the ex-Ohio State head coach will assume the role of “Vice President of Strategic Engagement” for the University of Akron, where he first started coaching back in 1971. The role comes with a $200,000 annual salary, according to ESPN.

From the sounds of it, the job entitles a lot of non-profit, community-building responsibilities. If this is true, and if he isn’t lured back onto a football sideline, all the credit in the world should be given to Tressel, a figure many in Ohio still adore. Most assumed that it was only a matter of time before someone gave him a second chance at coaching, be it in the NFL or elsewhere. To turn down considerably more money and time in the spotlight to give back to Northeast Ohio speaks a lot about his character. Time will tell if the gridiron draws him back in. Until that happens, though, he appears ready to enter the next phase of his life.
