Following names like Marcus Smart, TJ Warren and teammate Andrew Wiggins, Kansas center Joel Embiid made it official today by declaring himself eligible for the 2014 NBA Draft.

The decision doesn’t classify as a surprise, despite how much Embiid attempted to throw reports off weeks ago. He’s a seven-footer with what scouts drool over as a sea of potential. A sheer unknown only six months ago to most, Embiid’s stock skyrocketed with a dazzling display of footwork, back to the basket repertoire and intimidating rim defense.

Embiid’s bad back, however, caused him to miss the last few games of the Jayhawks’ regular season, all of the Big 12 Tournament and watch from the bench as Kansas was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. So there’s a red flag teams will analyze to the Nth degree between now and June.

For the big guy’s sake (ours too), here’s to hoping his NBA career pans out better than the last two immensely hyped seven footers, Greg Oden and Hasheem Thabeet.

Oh, yeah. Jabari Parker, you’re officially on the clock.
