While speaking with Revolt regarding his brother’s debut, Jungle shared that the album proved to be a pivotal piece in the survival of those around Nas.

“You didn’t know that it was going to go this far. Our friends was dying and we was still in the streets,” Jungle reflected. “It was tough back then. That Illmatic album just saved everybody’s life, I swear.”

However, many in their immediate circle feared that the project wouldn’t be successful due to several pushbacks and massive bootlegging. “Nas’ [album] was leaked for too long,” Jungle explained. “The album kept getting pushed back but the streets had it too long.” Hindsight being 20/20 we now know that the album did sell (300K+ copies by the end of 1994) and eventually went platinum years later.

Twenty years later, nothing’s been the same since for Nas and his QB brethren.
