Justin Timberlake undoubtedly had the top highlight from the 2013 MTV VMAs. Not that it was the most difficult thing in the world to accomplish because Miley’s flapjack cakes set the bar so low, but Timberlake’s mini-concert/NSync reunion was yet another notch in the win column for the guy who shares the same initials as yours truly.
The 20/20 Experience was met with overall positive reviews and went platinum in the blink of an eye. His “Legends Of The Summer” tour alongside Jay Z has been an overwhelming success (as will his own solo tour later this year). Then there was the awesome moment with Charlie Wilson, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell at the BET Awards.
If last night revealed anything, however, it’s that Timberlake’s catalog is solidified as one of the most successful and widely-appreciated of his generation. And he’s looking to add more with the arrival of the second installment of his Experience, which means he would officially do to pop music what DMX did to rap in 1998 by releasing two platinum albums in a calendar year.* This teaser type video keeps momentum in his corner by revealing the quick process both projects were created under. In other words, J.T., Timbaland and company recorded two albums in 20 days, hence the meaning behind the title.
Regardless if Timberlake’s heart was truly into creating these albums, he at least passes off image that he’s having fun not only making money hand over fist and dropping hit after hit. He’s increasing his stock as one of the most prolific post-Michael Jackson pop-stars.** According to Billboard, only he, Beyonce, Eminem, George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney stake claim as the artists to notch #1 albums as members of a group and soloists. The track record speaks for itself at this point.
Kudos to Timberlake’s marketing team, too. Their holiday bonus checks should look quite nice for all the world they’ve put in this year. 20/20 II hits stores September 30, by the way. The day of the Grammy deadline.
* – I know. You know. We all know Timberlake’s all but guaranteed to go platinum again. Hell, he may even do it first week. It’d really take a combination of Riley Cooper, Jerry Sandusky, Paula Deen levels of f*ckery for J.T. to this up. Although, it’s some people who’ll never support Timberlake for how he handled the Janet Jackson/Super Bowl incident.
** – Someone is going to react and say I said Timberlake > Jackson.
