Nearly 10 years ago, Kanye West flew across the pond and found himself in Tim Westwood’s studio because that’s unwritten international travel protocol in Hip-Hop. What happened next was never seen until now.
The self-proclaimed Yeezus – still, then, known as just “Kanye” – spent over 10 minutes providing community service to Timmy’s show freestyling just for the sake of doing so. The lyrics appear to come off the top of the dome over several rap classics (am I allowed to use that word?) such as Game’s “Dreams” and Jigga’s “Encore.” Even with “only” one successful album under his belt in ’05 – two if this happened Late Registration – buddy’s confidence was never, ever in doubt. Kanye West is a lot of things in this world, but boring isn’t one of them. And let’s just leave it at that.
One more thought though. I miss the days when rappers would freestyle at radio stations. Long live the timeless 2001 Roc-A-Fella Hot 97 takeover.
