When Kendrick Lamar Heard Jay-Z’s “Vibe” Verse For The First Time

“Don’t waste my breath, I don’t know how many moons a n—a got left” – Jay-Z

I’ve never met Michael Jordan, but I once stood maybe 15 feet away from him on a basketball court as he spoke to a gathered crowd. As a kid growing up and idolizing Mike’s magic, being that close was mesmerizing, even though I’m a grown ass man. We’re talking about one of the greatest and you sharing the same space, the same oxygen.

You think you’re cool and you say you don’t get starstruck…until you get around one of the largest stars in the galaxy and turn giddy as a schoolgirl. It’s enough to send a million butterflies fluttering around your insides. Which is how I imagine that Kendrick Lamar felt when he finally heard Jay’s verse for the “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” remix.

In the footage below, the whole TDE crew’s crammed into a NYC studio for a late night session for ScHoolboy Q’s upcoming album OxyMoron. While there, TDE CEO ‘TopDawg’ surprises Kendrick by cueing up Jay’s verse as the cameras capture K.Dot’s reaction.

On the outside, Kendrick plays it cool. But on the inside? That overwhelming number of butterflies I mentioned.

“When I heard that thing he sent back I said to myself, ‘I can’t be no floozy on this mother—er for sure’,” he said. “All them years of being in the studio, all them years of writing, all them years of freestyling and just being a student of the game don’t mean sh– if I can’t live up to this track, at least by a little bit being beside a legend in it.’

“‘I was so excited it took me a day,'” Lamar said of how long it took him to write his parts to the song after hearing Jay’s. [MTV]

By now, we’ve all heard the final product and heard what Kendrick did. Needless to say, he didn’t waste Jigga’s breath.
