“Maybe ’cause I’m a dreamer and sleep is the cousin of death”

By and large, 2013 served as a victory lap for Kendrick Lamar. good kid, m.A.A.d. city was still fresh enough that we bumped it through the first half of the year, “F*ckin’ Problems” saw him lay bars on a national, radio-dominating hit, and “Control” represented arguably the most exciting moment in hip-hop.

In short, Kendrick evolved from rapper to pop culture icon. But because so much of the attention surrounding him seems to pertain to what Drake is or isn’t trying to say, let’s take a moment to remind ourselves about the actual music that made Lamar such a household name. Crazy notion, I know.

The visual treatment for “Sing About Me” will definitely take you back to when you first bumped Kendrick’s studio debut. The black and white, underplayed visuals – featuring artist Eddie Peake making an accompanying mural – really allows maximum attention to be payed to the lyrics, which are as sharp and honest as ever.

And as fans of …m.A.A.d city know, the second half of “Sing About Me” – the haunting “Dying Of Thirst” – represents the emotional peak of Kendrick’s album. Expect those visuals at some point in January – we’re currently being told the 14th. Plenty of time to secure some tissues, lest you’re the sort that tries to fight through the dreaded sugar lump.
