The photo and caption on KD’s Instagram post tell the story: “#NewRules #RocNation.” After a few weeks of speculation, Durant signs on the dotted line and gains representation from Roc Nation Sports.
The move made Kevin the first NBA player signed under Jay-Z, who got licensed by the NBA to represent players last week.
I would guess this is a good move for KD. Obviously good for Jay-Z/Jay Z.
Why KD would leave any agent who got him a starring role in a critically acclaimed movie is beyond me
because that man is not…….. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter!!!!!!
Jay (and he probably does) better have a backup plan for this #NewRules mindset. Sometimes people have to take a step back before attempting to take a step forward. Roll through Marcy and really soak it in – because you cannot compete with multi-billion dollar individuals and corporations. Money and race reign supreme.
They will give you a piece – Jay is a prime example. Anything that can make them money, they will give you some to see that happen. What is 5MM to Samsung and all of the other corporations you do deals with?
It is pennies.
But think twice if they will ever allow you to have the whole cake.
You don’t feel like he’s survey the landscape before venturing into uncharted territory? Just asking to possible see what you’re seeing.
Oh, I know he has. This is not Master P we have here (no shots at Percy). But he is making mistakes – which is rare for him.
I know you know… there is a rule in business (that people with less experience in success do not see/see as a possible problem) – you can grow too quickly. A business/product/company/brand/etc. can sometimes actually be too in demand – so much so that they cannot keep up. Diversity is a key to wealth – but you cannot ruffle feathers at that expense.
Right now, I see him doing that. But I also seeing him having an easy and tactical escape route should any mumblings begin to emerge or he begins to take even one loss.
TRA i hear where you’re coming from. I feel like everything Jay has done since the black album when he finally retired has been a business move. Everything has a sponsor and I feel like hes no longer the legit “started from marcy and built it all on my own” to being a puppet for these huge corporations which stand for everything he used to be against.
I look at the 3 big albums that came out the other day: 1) Yeezus 2) Cole’s 3) Mac Miller’s. After listening to all 3, Yeezus and Miller’s completely have an independent feel. They made the exact albums they wanted to. While Cole’s sounds like he’s still whining about people controlling him and he wants to be free.
There’s a conversation in “Blood & Bone” on Netflix where so much is said:
“You are African American.
And myself and my friends, for the most part, don’t care for the company of African Americans.
Quite frankly, we’re entertained by you.
We’re thrilled by your high-flying acrobatics on the basketball court, that wonderful sense of rhythm you have, your animal athleticism.
But apart from that, we have no use for you.
I mean, let’s face it James. Do you set a place at your dinner table, for your pitbulls?”
Jay Z is simply a nigga that extremely, ridiculously, incredibly rich, people w/ OLD MONEY, are giving crumbs to. This #NewRules campaign he’s trying to start up, is foolish…but I understand it.
It’s catchy to his core audience, his “key demographic”….but when it all boils down, slim is simply a pitbull that these folks have let off the leash and given free roam of the compound to.
Soon as they feel the family pet has gotten a lil too comfortable, the reigns get pulled back, and control is taken back.
‘Just my thoughts man – right or wrong. Just what I was feeling at the time…’
I enjoyed that. I was just watching Netflix – I will have to check it out.
I agree with it – it is true.
Others might look at it as an excuse… but you watch what I watch… and you see what I see… and it is neither an excuse nor a “certain” card (but give a Black man a black one and he is happy – like Cadillac’s in trade for publishing)… it is fact.
I bring all of this up because of a very in-depth and delightful conversation I had over the weekend. Examples were given, etc. It is a campaign built upon false pretense, advertisement, and empowerment. And as someone who has worked with Jay since the beginning, the object is to build power. Money and power are not without one another – but you cannot advance by shouting – do it so minute that you are nothing more than a blip on the radar. Then, you are never seen as a threat. No one pays attention to the non-threatening. But the mentalities of those who stir the waters – especially minorities – are watched carefully. They will make an example out of you… even in 2013.
The worst thing that you can do as a Black male (even one with money) is to forget your place. Because the ones in control will quickly show you back to it. And those “places” still very much exist.
If gangsters move in silence so too should any rich or wealthy Black individual.
“If you measure the stock market not in dollars but gold, it is down 80% since 1999.
I no longer regard the US dollar as a valid unit of account.
People shouldnt value their wealth in dollars, because one day, in dollars, everyone will be a billionaire.”
What More Can I Say is such a dope song.
I have a bad feeling about this move by Mr. Durant.
Not a good move for KD imo. He already had a high profile with endorsements and commercials. Jigga’s track record of ppl under him isn’t stellar to say the least
I guess this will help Durants rap career. Other than that it doesnt make much sense for Durant.
yeah, at the least there, there shouldn’t be any chance of him sitting on the shelf waiting for a radio-friendly single
This is a good move for KD honestly… I don’t think he’s super-thirsty about endorsments the way Bron and Wade are. I think he’s closer to Tim Duncan in mindest, but a little more open to trying something different.
Jay’s arrangement with CAA probably facilitates some more creative opps beyond simply being a pure and simple pitchman for hire. It may be worth the risk. Also this RocNation/CAA thing is a really small roster of only about 5 signed athletes so far, so KD might get more attention here than he’d get with the big boy agents who have dozens if not hundreds of athletes and entertainers to manage.
But as usual, I also agree with TRA–Jay’s being pretty ambitious here and he will ruffle the Old Boys Club’s feather… It may hurt him at some point but I doubt it’ll hurt KD as no-one wants to be a knife-in-the-back of a 24yro who’s really the 2nd key pillar of the NBA’s future behind Mr. South Beach.
I spoke to someone in the sports agency world a couple weeks ago on this. Learned that as far as negotiating and actual contracts, agent to agent there’s a 5-10% variation in the actual amount to deals negotiated between players and teams. So, for the most part, the players know about how much they’ll be making regardless of who represents them.
But, it’s the perks and endorsements and branding that really varies between firms. That’s where Jay has his pull and that’s why players are gravitating towards him.
That’s exactly what I felt his appeal his/is to athletes. It’s not about cutting deals…It’s the branding aspect.
Random: I thought Jay was left handed?? But I agree with TRA everything he said was spot on.
