If anyone has the misconception that Kevin Gates is just some Future clone, please absorb his latest single “4:30 AM” and recognize real.
Despite his frequent use of Auto-Tune and tendency to sing gangster love songs, this bubbling Baton Rouge artist almost always laces haunting knockers like this with insight into a life that’s filled with as many ups & downs as instances of illicit activity. And, typically, the story’s told with a static-cling flow and lucid lyrics, which come alive more with every listen. Essentially, Gates portrays a lifestyle that makes for engaging music, but would scare the living hell of anyone trying to fill his shoes.
Since the sidelines seem a little more safe from our point of view and Mr. Gates’ world is worth watching, we’re going to keep absorbing the show via his upcoming Stranger Than Fiction project, due July 16.
