The Cleveland Cavaliers had the first pick in last Thursday’s NBA Draft. They would appear to have struck the first major chime of free agency, too, locking up star point guard Kyrie Irving for five years and $90 million.

Whether or not the move reflects a legitimate desire on Irving’s part to deliver the city of Cleveland a championship, the fact that players as young as Kyrie historically don’t leave that kind of money on the table or (most likely) a combination of the two doesn’t matter. Lakers fans can salivate all they want, but it’s going to be a long time before anyone can legitimately talk about prying Irving away from the Cavs.

And when you consider that whole Andrew Wiggins thing coupled with insane amounts of cap space (Cleveland will be linked to a potential LeBron reunion until he makes up his mind, but the Cavs have also been showing interest in Chandler Parsons and Marcin Gortat as well as Trevor Ariza), “a long time” could be a while.

So expect him to destroy his ACL on the way to the grocery store or something. It’s a Cleveland, “factory of sadness” thing everyone may not understand.
