Ask And You Shall Receive: Lance Stephenson’s ‘Hot N*gga’ Freestyle

“I been ballin’ hard since like the fifth grade, watching A.I. gettin’ 40 with the French braids…”

Rappers want to be ballplayers. Ballplayers want to be rappers.

It’s an infatuation we’ve known for decades. Newly minted Charlotte Hornet Lance Stephenson steps away momentarily from the practice facility to the recording booth. He joins a storied list of athletes who’ve attempted wear both hats like Deion Sanders, Shaquille O’Neal (who went platinum and recorded with Biggie), Ron Artest, Kobe Bryant, Stephen Jackson (who isn’t bad) and Lou Williams. The man dubbed “Born Ready” makes his music debut over the Big Apple’s song of the summer, Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot N*gga,” for a freestyle/remix you never knew you wanted.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, no mentions of LeBron or hints at whatever the hell happened in Indiana last season are present, which is kind’ve what I was hoping for prior to clicking play. Instead, it’s a ballplayer living out his rap dreams (that hopefully remain just that…dreams).

Bonus: He’s not the worst rhyming athlete ever and to be honest, Lance’s rapping is 100,000,000 times better than that time his team’s owner, Michael Jordan, tried to dance.*

* – Mike’s opening lines “I know you like playing alone, but do you mind if I shoot with you?” will never not be creepy as hell.
