While listening to Lil’ Kim’s “Dead Gal Walking,” it reminded me of Foxy Brown’s interview with The Combat Jack Show from a few months ago. In the very revealing and lengthy sit-down, Fox shared the story of how her 2005 dancehall-infused minor hit “Come Fly With Me” originated and how Jay Z, the newly appointed president of Def Jam at the time, wanted her to run with the Hip-Hop-meets-dancehall thing, a lane she previously forged with 2001’s “Oh Yeah.” Mr. Carter had it all figured out. With “Come Fly With Me” serving as the first single from Black Roses, Foxy’s comeback was going to be huge.
But one morning, two days before the video shoot, Foxy Brown lost her hearing.
And that’s why Lil’ Kim’s substandard “Dead Gal Walking” exists in 2013. Because Foxy went deaf in 2005.
