Guys. I was wrong.
I counted Lil Wayne out. After a couple of consecutive MVP years in 2006 and 2007 or so, Wayne seemed to let distractions, drugs and jail put his career on cruise control. Just three months ago, I had zero excitement about his supposed final album Carter V. But dammit if everything he’s done this year hasn’t been prime Lil Wayne material.
Usually when rappers fall off, they stay that way, especially after they’ve reached a certain level of success and longevity. It’s just human nature. But Wayne is different. He’s rededicated himself to being one of the best in the world and it shows.
“Krazy” is going to garner tons of “A Milli” comparison and it makes sense. The beat is schizophrenic. The punchlines are rapid-fire and most importantly the rapper is stellar.
Don’t look now, but we may be on the cusp of a classic album from Lil Wayne. And that’s a sentence I’d long given up on thinking I’d ever type again.
