“N 2 Gether Now” was the closest I got to Nu-Metal, Rap Metal or whatever you want to call it. Coming to said realization is oddly funny since the song is a straight up rap record. So really, I wasn’t any closer to Rap Metal upon initially hearing the song then than I am now.
Anyway, my disinterest wasn’t born out of hate. Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, whoever, they just didn’t catch my adolescent ears as I entered into rap geek mode. The music snob side effect often seen in rap geeks hadn’t set in yet; thus explaining why I didn’t wince at the prospect of Fred Durst rapping.
DJ Premier and Mr. Meth laid down the key ingredients which led to regular spins as a youngster. Fred Durst kind of languished in his appearance on some “I can rap too, guys”-tip: not absolutely terrible but quite short of great. I guess you could call his lines “struggle bars” as the kids like to say these days.
The song couldn’t hide it’s nature as a novelty record back then and it sure as hell can’t now. At the same time nothing about it is really egregious to the ears. It’s just not evoking the usual “AWW, REMEMBER THIS?!?!” reactions garnered from music in your formative years. Oh well, I’ll just be thankful Premier produced the track and be on my way.
