Marvel
If you got geeked at the sight of Marvel adopting the Jewel Runners’ salute for a couple of covers earlier this year, prepare to nerd the f*ck out. Marvel is again diving into the world of hip-hop on a new line called Hip-Hop Variants, which will feature covers that pay homage to some of the genre’s most iconic albums – and their artwork.
Uproxx was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at some of the tributes, which fans will be able to get their hands on in October. Below, take a look at a handful of the covers available, side-by-side with the album artwork that inspired them.
The Iron Man one is a monster.
This is why marvel stay winning. those run the jewels covers still the dopest though
The Howard The Duck one is perfect. It’s the kind of book that has Aunt May sticking up liquor stores.
The Extraordinary X-Men is my favourite out of the bunch. Digged the Ms Marvel one as well.
Where y’all at DC? I need my Batman sample covers.
Looking forward to the rest.
Btw, does anyone have to leave their hand down on “End” or “Page Down” in order to get to the comment section? It’s rather annoying (could be because I have twitter blocked but eh).
the big 3 in social media blocked (google included)*
The new Ms. Marvel might be one of my favorite Marvel comics in a decade, owing mostly to the fact that it’s one of the few that brings back the feeling of those early 60’s/70’s stories when all their heroes were young and figuring life out. The best stories tbh.
These are great, can’t wait to see them all.
i would’ve assumed the Iron Man one would’ve been a Ghostface Killah album.
too on the nose?
Maybe they’ll do that with an Avengers issue since Rae and Capa Donna were also on the Iron Man album cover. Like have Tony with Hulk and Thor dyeing Wallys together.
between wale and seinfeld, everything chance the rapper does, and this… ’tis a beautiful thing.
That Cap America one is too vicious. For all the shit people give Marvel for attempting to diversify itself (hella people caught feelings over Thor being a woman for a a few issues), sometimes, dope stuff like this comes outta it. Ego trip did something similar a few years ago, but I think it was fan-made:

the Capt. America deserves to be a movie poster
Uproxx ate my post, but I was gonna say most of the attempts in superheroes to “diversify” annoy the hell out of me. Well, there’s a scale.
Good = Kamala, Miles Morales
Meh = Jane Fos”thor”, Captain Marvel
Bad = Sam Wilson Cap
Excellent = Blue Marvel, Spectrum
That’s kinda off-topic, but I’m willing to explain/justify the rankings.
Hasn’t Marvel always been diverse?? I haven’t picked up a marvel comic since early 90’s but I always thought they had the best female and black characters since the 60’s. It’s not like they’re forcing some token characters in a few issues. They’re taking chances like they always have, right?
@ShawnPrincipe: For me that’s the thing. This new “diverse” thing is very revisionist in nature. It acts like Robbie Robertson and Storm (and more!) ain’t been around forever and a day. They might be short on LGBT characters but Marvel BEEN had POCs and female characters. But a lot of comic websites (and some fans) act like the shit just started a couple years back.
@Sage You’re insane. Sam Wilson Cap was very naturalistic.
Of course we’d have all preferred if it had been Patriot. That would have brought everything full circle. And they’re not revising anything. They don’t do as many big-ish retcons as DC. It’s not rewriting character history, it’s vacating the identity and moving new people into it, which they’ve always done. It’s just that they have spent a lot of time creating new characters and angling them towards that, and that those characters are now reflecting the diversity of comic audience. Gives us something to root for WHILE respecting the legacy. Sure, they could have elevated a few bit characters to make them more important than they should be, like Blade or so forth, but THAT to me would have been doubly disingenuous because it would mean changing those characters to warrant their higher placement.
@Aaron Smarter When I say “revising” I don’t mean in story. I mean in real life. Take Captain Marvel. They’re acting like its a big deal to give that name to a woman, but Captain Marvel was a black chick in the 80’s–why are we forgetting things like that to act like we’re taking steps?
And damn, you actually made me hate Falcap more than before, lmao. I never liked it because: I don’t like the writer who thought it up, to begin with. Then there’s the fact that Cap just got back the shield five years ago, so you’re re-treading stuff. And NOW I have another reason: It could have been fucking Patriot, who I love. :P
Plus I just hate replacing heroes in general. I grew up on these guys–stop forcing them off-screen for your newbs. Much as I was complaining about Capt. Marvel, name-change aside that’s how you do it. We’ve got her, and Kamala Khan. Steve is off somewhere trying to be a low-rent Nick Fury.
Test…
…This filter is getting annoying haha.
@Tom Mantzouranis mind posting the stand alone images por favor?

The Kamala Khan one is my favorite. Probably because its the only instance in which I’m both familiar with the material and enjoy it.
ommmgg this is so dope. i hope they do a jay z blueprint one.
Already been done, like 4 years ago. Come on give a little credit…

Genesis – Illmatic
One of these pictures does not belong, one of these rappers is not like the others…
(It’s Rocky.)
There’s one for Tyler, the Creator’s Wolf too. There’ll be fifty more in the coming months so there’ll probably be more that various people don’t belong, but hey, cool project still.
And even though the album itself was underwhelming Rocky had a dope sleeve and that Sam Wilson cover looks pretty fan-fricking-tastic

Those Marvel hip-hop album covers was totally dope. My favorite one was X-Men inspired “3 Feet High And Rising” album cover. It was the bomb. I like all the other ones including the Iron Man and Dr. Strange.
