Most people have seen the very old footage of a young Meek Mill, scruffy braids and plain tee, spitting for the camera on the streets of Philly. He’s progressed so far from those days that sometimes it’s easy to forget that before raps filled with references to watches, cars and champagne, Meek was – and still is – a talented lyricist.
Recently, HipHopSince1987 caught up with Meek and Omelly standing on a dark street in Philly shooting off rhymes over Tupac’s “Ambitionz As A Ridah.” Judging by their crew’s ability to chime in, Omelly’s bars seem to be written while Meek’s seem to be a split between actual frees and material he’s done before.
Regardless, seeing him still able to take it back to where it started for him and so many others is pretty cool. Too many artists can’t go back to their old blocks for whatever reason and actually freestyling shit that holds your attention is even more foreign to them. Not for Meek as he shows that no matter how far away he goes chasing dreams, he still knows where home is.
