Perhaps I was in the minority in this line of thought, but I was always under the impression that Nicole Scherzinger was the only member of the Pussycat Dolls who possessed a distinguishable voice. Former member Melody Thornton blows a big hole in that theory with her new mixtape, P.O.Y.B.L (Piss On Your Black List). Running ten tracks long and consisting of covers, remakes and original songs, listeners are able to get a feel for who Melody is as an artist. Thornton describes P.O.Y.B.L like this:
“Piss On Your Black List has nothing to do with being a rebel or fighting against anything. It has everything to do with fighting for myself,” says Thornton. “It’s clever with attitude. It’s kind of funny and gets a strong reaction; all things that, at times, describe my art.”
Aside from Melody’s voice, which initially threw me off guard, I instantly connected with P.Y.O.B.L because it actually sounds like R&B music. This probably has to something to do with her singing over popular instrumentals from the ’60s and ’70s, but given that she wrote a majority of the lyrics you can tell that she connects with what she’s singing–which in turn led me to connecting with her.
