Earlier today, Microsoft released a free downloadable consumer preview of Windows 8. This means that it’s for all to try out, fresh out of the oven even before it has a chance to cool off. Preliminary reports seem to be hyping it up, saying that the user interface of both the tablet and desktop versions excel in just about all imaginable aspects.
The operating system is very focused on real-time data, something that’s extremely essential in today’s technology. The home screen is essentially a collection of widgets that are constantly updating. So, for the paranoid refresh button-pushers like myself, it’s far more convenient to simply peek at the home screen and watch as stock tickers, RSS feeds, and weather continuously update automatically. Additionally, for the tablet version, Microsoft has developed an intuitive touchscreen keyboard that allows people to type using their thumbs, without having to set the device down. And from what I’m hearing, this may just finally be the first real competition the iPad will face.
Rest assured, I will be downloading this later on today, so you can all expect to read my personal experience with the OS in a few days time, but until then peruse through this gallery of screenshots to give you a taste of what’s to come. And if you’re ahead of the pack and already have Windows 8, please drop a line and let us know what you think of it so far.
For the truly curious, the Windows 8 preview is available for download here, so make sure to grab it before the demo period ends.
