With each passing performance, Miguel is cementing his status as the best live performer of his contemporary R&B class. Acoustic or full band, Late night or the Grammys, Miguel has tackled them all with equal aplomb, rarely failing to impress with his rangy vocals and well-rehearsed showmanship.
It’s an area of his craft where his not-so-newness pays dividends. Unlike most of the artists he typically gets grouped with, Miguel has been put through the wringer once already with his debut album, All I Want is You. Having had some time to find himself on stage (as well as on record), Miguel has developed a veteran’s confidence.
He’s now throwing in the artistic ambition to match. Performing last night on Saturday Night Live, Miguel eschewed standard run-throughs of his singles, choosing instead to rework an extended version of “Adorn” and put a psychedelic/garage rock spin on “How Many Drinks?” He continues to throw down the gauntlet (and the mic) with his stage show and remains the one to watch.
