I really don’t have much positive to say about this one. What we have is Wale and Miguel covering a classic American chune, “Bennie And The Jets,” for the song’s originator Elton John and the reissue of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on its 40th anniversary. Obviously Elton approved the move and the remake isn’t technically bad.

Plus, a few months ago, I brought the song up to my wife and kids and they’d never heard it. I looked at them like lepers because how on earth can you live in this century and not know about “Bennie”? And “The Jets”? The song should be an allusion at this point. In that respect, seeing a new version that brings the song back to the forefront – or there for the first time for some people – is cool with me.

However putting drop-kick Miguel and Folarin in charge of the new version feels like when someone is doing too much while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a sporting event. Their version feels more souped up in an American Idol way than an authentic twist on the original.

Sir Elton’s reissue goes to stores on Tuesday, March 25 and the deluxe version will be filled with remakes from other artists including Fall Out Boy, Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sandé and more.
